TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL
At the annual meeting of the Trades amd Labour Council last night the following officers were elected for the coming year: — President, Mr. J. M'Kensie; vice-president, Mr. J. Campbell ; secretary, Mr. L. M. A. Rearden; treasurer, Mr. F. Cornwell; trustees, Messrs. W. Waterworth and M. J. Reardon ; committee, Messrs. W. Cooper, H. Heap, F. Stott, W. Waterworth, and E. L. M'Hutchison. An industrial bureau was established and a committee- set up to specialise in matters of industrial interest to promote the welfare of organised Labour and bring into unions workers not at present organised.
Councillor Tovwisend has given notice that he will move at next Monday's meeting of the Petone Borough Council as follows : — (1) That the engineer be instructed to take practical tests to ascertain the delivering capacity of the water mains, both into the settling tank and from the settling tank into Petone: (2) that all water mains in the borough for fire purposes only (with the exception of those in public streets) be immediately sealed, to be broken only in case of fire; (3) that the instruction of the council to meter all extraordinary water supplies be only enforced at present in the cases of those places where the consumption of water is believed to greatly exceed that required for ordinary domestic purposes, or where no rates are chargeable. Two exceptionally fine bullocks, owned by Mr. Fred Fairey, of Nelson, are being shipped to the Sydney Royal Show by the Moeraki sailing this afternoon. They have been entered for the fat cattle class at the fixture mentioned. One of the animals is a purebred Hereford (Maori King), seven years old, and weighing 1 ton 2cwt 2qrs. The other is a Shorthorn (Maorilander), eight years old, and weighing 1 ton 3c wt 3qrs. Competent judges have declared these bullocks to be the best that have ever left New Zealand, and Mr. Fairey, who was succeesful with them last year, is again hopeful of winning the coveted blue ribbon. The shipping arrangements are in the hands of Messrs. Dalgety and Co. All women interested are requested to form, a deputation to meet the Hon. H. D. Bell to discuss the prevention of toe white slave traffic in New Zealand. Further particulars will be found in. tho Post's advertising columns to-morrow. I
