PACIFIC DEFENCE THE TREATY WITH JAPAN MUST KEEP AUSTRALIA WHITE.

(By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright.^ (Received March 26, 10.20 a.m.) , MELBOURNE, This Day. The Federal Prime Minister (Mr. J. : ' Cook) speaking at a banquet at Wan*\ garatta, referring to the reliance upon, the Japanese Treaty for the peace of the Pacific, said that they were undep treaty obligations with a nation whose people they might not admit to theic , shores. They must at all cost defend, the White Australia policy. He believed the time was ripe for tho development of naval defence. He would like to see Canada and South Africa round the conference table as well as Australia and New Zealand. The* latter Dominion so far had kept to theidea of contributing to the strength ofj the Imperial Navy. On the other hand, Australia had begun to develop its own navy. He hoped Mr. Massey's latest' speech was indicative of feeling in New, Zealand, and that soon Australia would' be able to welcome the Dominion in tha compact.
