LAST DAYS

BUSY TIMES AT TRENTHAM MONTGOMERY SERVICE CHAMPION. (From Our Special Reporters.) The day before the final, no matter how well the time-table may be arTanged, is generally a rush day at the Dominion Bifle Meeting. Yesterday differed from previous pre-final days in that it was even busier than usual. Of course the greatest interest- of the largest number was in the long-range championship matches which were to decide who should shoot for the King's Prize today. How the decision was made — on, a fair day with no favour — i& told elsewhere. As announced yesterday, Rfhu. Vennell, who has hitherto been little heard, of, won the Taranaki match. The closing down of the Running Man competition at noon left the way clear for the Service Championship match, which is for the Service matches what the King's Prize is for the other matches. Sgt.-Major Montgomery, of Dunedin, went down to the mounds with' a substantial lead of 21 pointa from the next man, Pte. S. Devore, of Auckland. Whai affected his shooting it would be difficult to cay. Anyway Montgomery shot badly in the match. In the snapshooting section he made only Id (two bite) out of a possible, though hardly probable, 35. Rapid firing brought him 33 out of 50 at the 500 yds range, and in the slow shooting at 600 yds ho obtained 15 out' of 30. Nevertheless his big lead on previous matches carried him through, and he won a -victory whioh he well deserved, for he has hitherto shot most consistently. In Service matcheshe is an ideal man, and last year also he went near to the championship, taking third place. Pte. Devore, a Territorial who has shot remarkably well in these matches, came second^ Sgt. F. H. Sharland was third ; and fourth was Rflm. Masefield, who. in this 1 competition added to his laurels by lifting himself from a low position on the list with a magnificent score of 97 (28—41—28). Following are completed scores of matches fired yesterday : — SERVICE CHAMPIONSHIP, open to 50 highest aggregate scorers in individual Service matches. Championship to be decided on final scores.
