PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The newly-elected committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to v Animals held the first meeting yesterday, Mr. V. R. Meredith presiding. Other members present were :—Mesdames A. E. Kernot, M. A. Williams, C. H. Seville, and C. Christie, Miss E. Richardson, and Messrs, J. Lewis, J. S. Jamiesoh, J. Ilott, and W. Watson. In his report the inspector (Mr. Seed) stated that_he had in hand several cases of alleged cruelty to horses. He had examined an aged gelding, a mere skeleton, and found that it was suffering from a large open sore on one fetlock. After further examination the animal was ordered to be immediately destroyed. Mr. Seed recently had occasion to warn the driver of a local milk cart for working a 'decepit old horse, which was unfit for even light duties. Tho owner took heed to the warning, and agreed to give the animal a lengthly spell. Acknowledgment was made for the following subscriptions : — Miss Paul, £1; Mrs. F. G. Wilson, 15s 6d ; A. S. Paterson and Co.. Ltd., 10s 6d ; Mrs. Page, Stewart Dawson and Co., and New Zealand Colonial Carrying Co., 10s each ; Mr. G. H. Scales, 7s 6d ; Mrs. Christie, 6s ; Mesdames M'Eldowney, ! Madeley, Ronayne, Garnet. Harty, Messrs. Phelps, Wilson and Co., Windsor, TST.F. Co., C. Hill and Sons. Hirst and Co., C. H. Hunt, W. H. Nash, C. Morris, jun., D. A. Abercrombie. and Dr. Henry, 5s each : Messrs. Donoghue, J. S. Rickard, C. Saynes, W. J. Helyer. W. Buddell. and Mesdames Baillie and 'Fisher 2s 6d each ; Mrs. Valentine and Miss Gruar, 2s each. Total, £9 11s. Accounts amounting to £12 0s 6d were passed for payment. Mention was made of the fact that the collections were now not so large as in ! former years, and it was agreed that if possible the reason for this decrease be ascertained.
