New Zealand's world-famous pilot fish "Pelorous Jack" has been missing from his usual haunte at the Franca Pass for over eighteen months, and it.ia feared that he has finally disappeared. Well-known 6kippers who trade regularly in Cook Strait aver that the fish hae not l»en seen since th* foreign whalers were so active some time ago. It is suggested that "Jack" wae captured, about then, and that the strangers were not aware of the interest attaching to him. In making enquiries this morning, a Poet reporter was informed" by the mate of a, regular trader that Pelorous Jack was seen early in November, but not since, "t am absolutely positive it v/ae he," said our informant. The general opinion te. however, that "Jack" will never again guide the ships safely through the Pass. Mr. C. Lujjon, accompanied ,by his wife, arrived in, Wellington this morn» ing from the South,, en route to "Suva, where he will take charge of the Union Company's new hotel now in course ,of construction. With a number of Indian coolies, he arrived at the Bluff on Sun* day in the steamer Aparima from Cal» cutta, and he will go to Auckland by the Victoria this evening. Some of the coolies are to act as servants at the hotel. They will arrive in Wellington on Saturday next ? and will go north by the Corinna to join the Navua at Auckland. Mr. W. Trueman has presented lo the Petone Borough Council some interesting samples of oil in its various stages of refining, and also samples of shale, oil coke, and paraffin wax. Thee* samples are to be placed along with other exhibits in the corridor of the Public Library. ' The local labour market has not .yet reached its normal summer level. Some few applications for employment are being received by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) from unskilled labourers each day. The difficulty that the City Council has in accommodating the surplus unemployed is accentuated by the fact that its expenditure is at present confined to revenue. No loan moneys aro being spent, thus restricting the amount of casual labour required by the Corporation. A number of men are engaged in carrying out work in connection with . the ' formation of Central Park, and^ altogether,, the council is endeavouring to meet the conditions by employing as many men as it possibly can. During last winter the council carried out a very progressive policy in connection with the reclamation works at Kilbirnie, and also the work upon the recreation area adjoining Lyall Bay. These works were carried on to a greater extent than the council • originally proposed. The expenditure was to be spread over a period of twelve months, and only a certain amount was available during 'the year, tn pushing this work ahead last winter, the council considered that it would absorb the unskilled labour until, with the advent of summer, work on the wharves and in the country would become more certain. Unfortunately, conditions have altered, and even now, in the middle of summer, quite a number of unskilled men are making application for work. In tho opinion of the Mayor, conditions will very soon be restored to normal again. In the meanwhile, 'if those who have no special ties in the city move into th'o country, where work is offering, a number of those at present out of employment hero will find positions. Many an amateur gardener in Wellington has had cause to regret his carelessness in handling milk weed. The weed when bruised or cut exudes a liquid which somewhat resembles cow's milk in appearance, but is very poisonous. If one is gaixlemng and allows any of the milk to get into his eyes he suffeia acute pain for. a time/ and unless reiW measures are taken the consequences ato apt to be rather serious. Some suffcrm have been blinded for houre, and i 1 acute cases the sight lias been lo&t fin 1 days. Last week a resident of tlio Thames, who has a fine garden, \\m foolish enough to brush away some psu* spiration from around his eyes after lie had been pulling up some milk wc'ui, and as a result he became quite blind and suffered great pain. He was hurried off to tho hospital, where the application of lotions gave him relief, but it will be days beforo his eight will be properly restored.
