LONDON, 2tSh Ocjk>ber. George Gray, the billiardist, has challenged' anyone to a level match of l&,000 up, on level terms, with ivory balls. Gray's backer is willing to risk a substantial sum. LINER'S NARROW ESCAPE. LONDON, 28th October. The iceberg which the Ocean Steam Navigation Company's steamer Teutonic, 9984 tons, sighted 172 miles east of Belle Isle, was almost on top of the vessel when seen. It towered above the boat decks, and passed close to the stern as the vessel sheered off in the nick of time. MEETING OF A PEER'S CREDITORS. LONDON, 28th October. At a meeting of creditors of Earl de la Warr, the latter's counsel stated that the secured creditors represented £146,425, and unsecured £17,879. [Earl de la Warr, born in 1869, served with Bethune's Horse in South Africa. In 1891 he married the Hon. Muriel Agnes Brassey, who divorced him in 1902. In the following year he married Miss Hilda Lennox Tredcroft, daughter of Colonel C." Lennox Tredcroft.] MISS CATHERINE ELKINS. LONDON, 28th October. Miss Catherine Elkins, formerly reported to have been engaged to the Duke of Abruzzi, has been secretly married to Mr. William Hitt, a resident of Washington. Her relatives have not been informed. [Miss Elkins, a daughter of ex-Sena-tor Elkins, of Ohio, has some pretensions to beauty. Her name as the probable bride of the Duke of Abruzzi has been spoken of for some two or three years. Prince Luigi, Duke of Abruzzi, is a cousin of the King of Italy, and an officer of the Italian navy. His engagement to Miss Elkins was said to have been broken off because of objections on the part of the Italian Royal • Family, particularly the Dowager-Queen Margherita. Later it was reported that obstacles had been removed, and that the Italian Royal chaplain was to prepare Miss' Elkins for entry into the Catholic Church.] INDIAN PEARL MERCHANT'S BANKRUPTCY. DELHI, 28th October. The well-known Bombay pearl merchant, Abdul Rehman, " has become bankrupt. His liabilities total £113,000. The bankrupt was widely known in Western India as a racehorse owner, under the pseudonym of " Mr. Lion." OFFER OF LAND IN SUTHERLANDSHIRE. LONDON, 28th October. The Development Commissioners are. considering an offer by the Duke of Sutherland to sell 200,000 acres of land in Sutherlandshire at £2 an acre. MOTOR-CAR RECORD. LONDON, 28th Oct<sjj<y. An interesting collection of woodwork done by district high school pupils in the Wairarapa^ under the direction of the instructor, Mr. D. Grant, is at present lying in the Education Board's office, | awaiting shipment to Auckland, where it will form part of the exhibit to be staged by the primary schools of the Dominion. The exhibit comprises models of educational apparatus, much of which is used in actual instruction in secondary subjects m the schools. The work, which is well-finished, calls for much delicate workmanship and minuteness of
