THE CHEESE STORE

i» The new cheese store built by the Harbour Board will receive all cheese intended for export for the purpose of examination, check weighing, and stamping. The Department of Agriculture has pointed out t>9 tho board that this would bring Wellington into line with other cheeße-grading ports, and thus enable the work to be carried out on a much better principle than heretofore. The charges would be 3s per ton of ten crates of cheese, as against and including fourteen days' storage, cost of labour for opening and closing crates, and other work. The charges at other ports were : Patea, 4s per ton of 12£ crates; New Plymouth, 3s for 124 crateß, and Auckland (where cool storage is provided), one-sixteenth of a penny a pound on net weight. The .department expressed the hope that the board would be more than recouped for the outlay on new stores and the better facilities now provided for dealing with cheese. The letter from the department recognising the enterprise of the board in widening the facilities referred to, was received with the warmest approval by members.
