ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
FATAL ACCIDENT IN LYTTELTON GAOL. l»T TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, 22nd October. Shortly before 2.30 this afternoon a, serious accident occurred at the Lyttelton gaol. A number of prisoners were engaged in lifting a ladder over a gate which gives access to the prison. A prisoner, Richard Raymond, was on the inside of the entrance assisting -to t get the ladder into position by means of a. rope. The ladder dislodged a heavy piece of masonry, which fell a distance of about 20ft, striking Raymond on the head. Dr." Newell was quickly in attendance, and after rendering first aid ordered the man's removal to the casualty ward. The man's skull was 'fractured, and he died at 10.30 to-night. FALL DOWN A LIFT. WANGANUI, This Day. A man named J. Lowe, machinist at the Chronicle, Office, fell down* a, lift this morning, breaking his right leg at the knee and also at the ankle. He was removed to tie Hospital.
