FASTER FERRY SERVICE MAORI RESUMES NEXT WEEK.
Ihe local office of tho Union Company received notice to-day to tbo effect that the Maori, which for 6ome tune past has been imdergonig overhaul and survey at Port Chalmers, will resume running next week. It was previously announced that the work of overhauling the veissel would not hecompleted until the end of tho month, but according fc^ the present arrangements the Maori is to leave Povfc Chalmers on Thursday next for Lyttelton. She then resumes running in tho Wellington- Lyttel ton ferry service, in conjunction with tho Wahine, being fixed to sail from the southern port on ' Friday morning, the 24fch October. On arrival of tho Mararoa at Welling* ' ton next Thursday morning she will bo laid up at this port for an indefinite period. Tho departure of the Manuka, which is scheduled to sail for Melbourne, via southern ports, on Thursday evening, has been postponed until 8 p.m., in order that she may act as a substitute for tho Mararoa for the trip to Lyttelton. With two such vessels as the Maori and W»liino running between Wellington and Lyttolton tho travelling public should have no cause for complaint, and with favourable weather conditions the steamers should make a regular connection with the first southern express from Christchurch each day. Captain W. Manning, who for many years has been master of the Mararoa, will have charge of the Maori, and left Lyttelton last night for Dunedin to take up tho position. Captain S. Vint, who has been relieving Captain Manning as master of the Mararoa, will continue in charge of tho vessel until she withdraws.
