GOLF NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

(UT TEIiEGRAPH — PBESS ASSOCIATION.) DUNEDIN, 15th October. The following games in the first round of the Amateur Championship (in addition to those telegraphed yesterday) were also concluded : — F. Ross (Auckland) beat R. L. D. Kidston (Wellington), 2 and 1 j C. R. Sargood (Dunedin) beat M. H. M'Ewau (Dunedin), 3 and 2. In the Bogey Handicap the following handed in the best cards : — N. K. Cox 5, 1 down; C. H. Hewlitt 6, 1 down; A. J. Sise 11, 1 down; F. L. Hindley 14, 1 down; 0. A. Seymour 2, 2 down; L. Jardine 4, 2 down; L. D. Huret, 6, 2 down; J. Forbes, 2, 3 down; C. R. Sargood 4, 3 down; H. Brasch. 3, 3 down; R, May 13, 3 down; H. C. Smith scr, 4 down. The play in the Amateur Championship was -responsible for come good contests. . A. D. S. Duncan (Wellington) secured a victory over G. L. Cuthbertson (Invercargill), but not so -easily an many had expected. Tho game lay all square at the twelfth hole, but Duncan secured the next two, and aftex a square at 1 Bishopscourt, got the Gorge, thus winning 3Up and 2to play. F. Ross (Auckland) and R. L. D. Kidston (Wellington) were dormy 2, and' for a moment it seemed as if the match must go to the last green. Ross's second ran under the tall macrocarpa hedge on the left of the green, but from an uncomfortable stance, and with his stroke impeded by a fence just behind the ball, ho laid his shot practically dead. Kidston had played a good second nicely on to the green, and the hole was squared in 4, leaving Ross 2. up and 1 to play. Ross is the only Auckland player who survived the qualifying rounds, and his progress will be watched with interest. The finest contest was that in the professional match between W. B. Simpson (Wellington) and F. G, Hood (Auckland), this being carried to the nineteenth ' hole, after Simpson was 3 down with 5 holes to go. Going out the first two holes were halved in 5. The next went to Hood. Hood played the following seven holes in average 4's, and got the turn in 38. 3 up on Simpson, who was 41. Both halved the tenth hole in 3, and the next three v were halved in bogey, leaving Simpson still 3 down. Simpson won the next two in four and three and halved the next in 3 and the seventeenth in 4, making the game dormy 1". Both shots to the lawn were in good position, but Hood's approach was short, and Simpson took the hole in 3, making all square at the eighteenth. Both got fine drives to the nineteenth, and Simpson's second found the high ground to the right of the hole, but short, and Hood was in a good position on the level ground. - Simpson approached well, but Hood overran the hole, and failed to take the chance of squaring after Simpson missed his next putt. The two players had a good following over the last few holes. Simpson's win was greeted with applause. The contest between M'Ewan (Wairarapa) and Watt (Wellington) was also responsible for some good golf.
