RACING MEN RETURN
<» . SOITANO'S EFFORT IN THE DERBY (By "Sir Bedivere.") Quito a big contingent of New Zealanders arrived back from Sydney by tho Moeraki, which was safely tied up shortly before 1 p.m. The party included Mr. E. J. Watt, who tells me that Midnight Sun has gone back to Melbourne; Mr. Luttrell, who was fortunate enough to bring back a large amount of ioreien capital; Mr. Geo. Currie, who bred Beau Soult; J. Hcnnah, the i owner-trainer of Julian; Trainers R. J. Mason, F. Davis, and J. Williamson ; and the jockeya, A. Oliver and F. D. Jones. The general opinion is that the Australian three-year-olds, not excepting Beragoon, are a moderate lot. Solta.no is brilliant, but cannot stay. Ho was galloped on in the Derby, but the interferenco he so met with did not materially affect his chance, and his sudden retirement was duo to his having choked himself through pulling. All the yarns about Oliver losing various parts of his gear are, as was to bo expected, so much moonshiue. Some of the stories circulated were even more ridiculous, one be- j ing to the effect that the colt had "swallowed his tongue!" " Did you ever have a horse do that?" Mason was asked in all seriousness, to wliicb th* crack trainer could only reply, " No, if I get them hungry enough to swallow their food regularly it is enough foi me." In the mile and a-quarter even*, on the third day of tho meeting Man. ning rode Soltano to the front, whereas in the race he won at Rand, wick he was allowed to run along at his own pace. These forcing tactics left him run to a standstill before the straight was entered, and although he could in no circumstances have won, he might have hung it out better if he had been differently handled. Beragoon was hard ridden in an attempt to go with the New and this left him, too, stone cold, so that when Duke Footo came on the scene the race was over. Beau Soult is said fo have been, ridden anything but a good race in the Derby, and his breeder is still confident that he can stay. Unfortunately Ins near hock_ swelled slightly after the race and as his connections decline . to take any risks with him he will nob race again until the autumn. Beragoon lightened up a lob after his races, and it is thought highly probable that Andelosia will beat him in the V.R.C. Derby. Soltano landed in good condition and may be taken straight out to Trentham, though his trainer lias not definitely decided as to this. R. J. Mason's team included a two-year-old brother to Mowbray, who, by all accounts, has developed a. habit of getting rid of his rider, and a colb by Malster from Comely. J. Hannah had a good win. over tho A.J.C. Meeting, but was unlucky in that his hurdler Julian, whom he brought back, should have gone amiss. Several of the New Zealand jumpers have become sore. Prince Eddie was unable to start on this account, and both Beacon and Glenmore (who could not havo missed at his first attempt had he not struck a fence and dislodged hia rider) are moving in ( scratchy style. Whakaweira has gone wrong in the hgamenb. Emerson did not return home, and will bfe riding at Flemington next month. GOLF AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. (dy telegraph— pbess association.)
