ASSAULT ON A CHINESE

FINE OF £5. After The Post went to Press yesterday further evidence was heard in the case in which William Warne and William Edward Hastie were charged with assaulting Young Wing On. Hastie swore that it was Warne, not himself, who hit the Chinaman with the iron be-laying-pin. The Magistrate (Mr. W. G. Eiddell), in summing up, said he doubted whether there had been any concerted action on the part of the two. As there was a doubt, accused Warne should have the benefit of it, and the case against him would be dismissed. His Worship was satisfied that Hastie committed the assault,- and fined him £5, with costs (£4 2s). Default was fixed at one month's imprisonment. An order was made that half the fine was to be paid to the Chinese to cover medical expenses.
