CONFERENCE AT WESTPORT (»T TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WESTPORT, This Day. A conference between the managers of the coal mines of the West Coast and the executives of the mining unions was opened at Westport yesterday. Those present are : Mining managers — Messrs. Brown, Milligan, Marshall, and Smith (Denniston), Messrs. Dunn and M'Cormack (Granity), Messrs. Crowe and M'Avoy (Stockton), Mr\ Jamas" (Seddon--ville State mine), Mr. Leitch, (Blackball) ; mining executives — Messrs. Diamond, Brown, and Hunter (Denniston), Messrs. Dowgray, Newman, and Williams (Millerton), Messrs. O'Rourke and Arbuckle (Runanga State mine), Messrs. Alexander and Niven (Stockton), Messrs. Finch and Scott (Blackball), Mr. Knight (Paparoa). This morning the conference was devoted to the right claimed by the mining companies to work a third shift for development purposes, over which the dispute at Blackball has been precipitated. The conference will also go into the question of working agreements for mines. The conference had not concluded the discussion on the dog watch difficulty at the 1 o'clock adjournment.
