BANKING LEGISLATION

The Hon. W. F. Massey stated this aft6rnooii that the Government does not intend, in any banking legislation which may be brought down this session, to make provision to enable any such institution to carry on business without special empowering legislation. Jt was suggested by Mr. F. T. Moore, of Johnsonville, at the Counties' Conference yesterday, that the Government should place a heavy tax on motor-carp, and impose a country tax, with the object of utilising the revenue so obtained in the maintenance of the main roadß of the country. RECORD HILL CLIMB. The record hill climb for commercial motor vehicles in New Zealand stands to the credit of tho Argyll motor-lorry, which recently, in tire presence of a Government official and carrying a full load of two tons with four passengers aboard, mounted Reuben-avenue, Brooklyn, up a ruling grade of 1 in 3£. Several other makes of motor-lorry attempted the hill, but all failed. Argyll commercial motors are on order for the Wellington City Council, the Kelbtirne Motor- bus Company, and several municipalities in the South Island. For full particulars apply J. E. FJl^erald, North i^and agent, Lambton^may.— Aclvt.
