REMISSION OF RATES
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I havo been waiting anxiously for an opinion from your paper on the question of remitting rates on tho Athletic Park, which a deputation from the Rugby Union is trying to obtain. Surely you cannot support such an audacious proposition, and do not intend to stand idly by and see the ratepayers of this city robbed by any body of athletes who cannot successfully manage their affairs? Whether the Rugby Union can make expenses meet or not, there is no good reason why it should bo relieved of it« responsibilities. If it is, then the council should, in common justice, subsidise every sporls body in the city, as that is practically what a remission of rate* would mean. If those who have control of the Park were to give their own services free and invoke the aid of volunteers who axe enthusiastic Rugbyites, they would not need to go crying to the council. Their action in doubling the charges of admission is fast aJienating the sympathies of Rugbyite 1 ;, and sounding their own deathknell. Trusting that the council will study the interests ipf the citizens and not of any class, — I am etc, PROMPT RATEPAYER. Wellington, 23rd May, 1913.
