MUSICAL UNION

CONDUCTORSHIP OFFERED TO HERR SAUER. A largely attended meeting was held at St. Andrew's Schoolroom last night to consider a proposal to resuscitate the Wellington Musical Union. Mr. G. Shirtchffe presided, and in opening the meeting said that the large attendance was evidence that though the Musical Union had been in recess if was by no means dead. Thafc night they weie to heai Herr Carl Saver's suggestions for the furtherance of oratorio, operatic, and chamber and orchestral music in the city. A tentative offer had already been made Herr Saver to act as conductor of the' Musical Union, which had been in recess since Mr. Robert Parker had resigned the position of conductor. Herr Saner then addressed those pre sent, and detailed his experiences in the musical world. He had first come to Australia to adjudicate at a big eisteddfod in Western Australia, after which he had gone back to the Continent, and conducted Grand Opera. He returned to Melbourne, and during a three years' stay had acted as judge at some sixteen competitions in all States. The climate, however, had affected his health and he decided to seek a rtew field. He had an offer to go to America, but had not finally accepted it. He had been approached on behalf of the committee of the union to take the society over, and if he did so, he assured members that he would not be tempted to desert it for any other offei Herr Saver _ then gave an idea of his intentions in regard to such a society, and what he would expect from members. After the meeting had considered Herr Saver's suggestions in committee, it was decided unanimously to invite him to take up the conductorship of the Musical Union.
