ALLEGED BIGAMY

AUCKLAND, 15th March. At the Police Court Harry hotel porter, residing at Hamilton, was charged with having committed bigamy at Auckland in . August last, going through the form of marriage with Kathleen Kelly, being already married. The evidence given was to the effect that accused was married at St. Paul's Church, Canterbury, on 12th February, 1908, tp Beatrice Newton, who was present in Court. He subsequently went to Newcastle, and returned eight 'months later, when a child was born. He again left New Zealand. He had written to his wife and sent her money, but Bhe did not see him again till February last in Hamilton. Accused, i-i .a statement produced by the police, cud not deny the allegations, but stated that there were peculiar circumstances connected with the first marriage. He reserved his defence and was committed for trial, bail being allowed in his own recognisance of *aUO and two sureties of £100 each.
