THE CARNIVAL SPORTS COMMITTEE'S WORK.
GOOD PROGRESS. A meeitng of the Sports' Committee in connection with the Citizens' Easter Carrival was held last evening in the Mayor's room, Mr. A. Marryatt presiding. The secretary of the Wellington Football Association wrote stating that a football representative match . had been arranged between the Auckland and Wellington Y.M.C.A.'s, and enquired whether it would be possible to play that J match at the park on Saturday morning. Further consideration was deferred until next Tuesday. The Rugby Union wrote offering to put on two seven-a-side matches on Monday afternoon. The offer was accepted. The matches to commence at 3.50 o'clock. The programme submitted by the University Tournament Committee was ap- 1 proved. The committee discussed at some length the advisability of providing for a wood-chopping competition. A fund of information was received from prominent choppers in the Hutt Valley, who seemed very pleased at the prospect of such an event in the programme. According to the programme proposed the prize-money necessary would be about £15. It was considered doubtful whether the executive would agree to this. There was also the question as to whether there would .be sufficient area available at any time. This matter was finally referred to the executive, which will be asked to consider the prize-money. The Highland Dancing Committee reported in favour of holding various dances on the' basis of open competition, including reel dance, sword dance, Highland fling, hornpipe, and in addition pipe music competition. The necessary prize money (about £25) was guaranteed, and the programme was approved. Owing to the possible difficulty in regard to the prize money, it was decided to abandon the tug-of-war. Mr. M. Luckie stated that he did not see any chance of making the costume cricket match a success. The time at his disposal was too short, and he would have some considerable difficulty in getting together twenty good comedians. It was decided to drop this item. Mr. Cathie, on behalf of the Hockey Association, asked permission to put on an exhibition hockey match. This was agreed to, and the match was fixed for 3.30 on Saturday. It was decided to keep in view an idea to put on a ladies' hockey match,, providing the carnival is extended to Tuesday. The Athletic " Sports Sub-Committee submitted a comprehensive programme, which included a Marathon race of about ten miles, and numerous running and field events. Certain members of the committee agreed to canvas for prizes for the Marathon and relay races. The executive is to be > asked to provide medals for the remaining events. This programme was also approved. The proposal to hold a fancy-dress carnival was referred to the executive with a note to the effect that the committee was prepared to carry the function out providing the necessary prizemoney was forthcoming. Mr. A. Marryatt was appointed official director of the sports' programme.
