A scheme for dealing with casual drunkards, which has been, operating for many year* in America and live years in Victoria, has been introduced lit the Central Police Court. The Rev. Mr. Hammond and & mie« fiioner ©OnveTße with likely men in the Courtyard, informing them that if they will sign a pledge undertaking - not to take liquor for a period of not 'ess than six months, the Magistrate will be informed, and will probably cot convict them. The signatories are visited in. their own homes the same week, and a letter of encouragement is sent) The experience in Victoria shows that |5 per cent, sign, and of these 80 per cent, keep the pledge or aro not heard of again.
