ANNUAL COLLECTION PUBLIC CONTRIBUTE £224. The prophecy made" by come of the collectors for the St. John Ambulance Aeeociation on Saturday that the actual amount subscribed by the public would last year's total waa fully borne out. Altogether the ladies who generously came to the association's aid < and mildly but persistently requested all and sundry to contribute something, < collected £224 3s 7|d. This was made up as follows :—: — £ s. d. i Gold ... „ „. 410 0 Half-crowns ... .. 18 15 0 Florins 21 10 0 Shillihgs '.„ 113 0 0 Sixpences 40 10 0 Threepences ' ... ' ... 12 5 0 Pence and half-pence ... 13 10 0 Total 224 0 0 The collection was very well orgahised. There wae hardly a corner of the city or part of any street where the public pass in large numbers wherfe a collector could be avoided. People anxious to be saved frofa repeated requests cheerfully donated a shilling, and got a little paper badge in return, which they promptly pinned on the lapel of their coat. It is worth noting that the collection last year amounted to £132. Most of the collection-boxes this year Were handed into the secretary, Mi*. J. D. Avery, and. Messrs. C. P. Powleu and H. Seed, who assisted him, at No, 8 Committeeroom at the Town Hall. The last box was handed in at 9 p.m., and it was not long before the result was announced.
