POINT ELIZABETH MINE

Recently Sir Arthur Guinness asked the Minister of Mines whether he would cause an 'enquiry' to be made by an independent tribunal as .to the allegations made by the workers at the Point Elizabeth State Coal Mine to the effect (a) that the State Coal Mine is being flooded and large quantities of coal are being lost, (b) that the pumping machinery is not sufficient to cope with the water in the mine, and (c) that insufficient sanitary arrangements are provided at the mine for the miners? Yesterday afternoon the Hon. W. Fraser replied that he did not see that an independent tribunal is necessary, as the mine is regularly inspected by competent officers independent of the manager. A great deal of, pumping is being done, as evidenced by sthe fact that quite lately 16 tons of water have been raised tor every ton of coal won. As to the insufficiency of the sanitary arrangements no complaints have ' been received, but the matter will be enquired into.
