NAVY LEAGUE
ESSAY COMPETITION. ¦ The following letter is being sent by the hon. secretary of the Navy League (Mr. Palmer") to the local headmaetere of school branches :— -"The subject chosen for this year's eesay .competition is the satae &6 that for last y;ea.r, viz. : 'Why should the British Empire possess an all-powerful Navy?' It is deeiretL an before, to impress npori the niinos of the boys and girls how much they owe to the self-denial and determination of our nation (both individually . and collectively) in the pact : how much the future welfare of the Empire' depends upon Imperial federation ; and how absolutely necessary it is that ,the mass of the people should fully realise the extent of the rujnation and distress that naval disaster would -mean to the-Em-pire, and to Njew Zealarid in partial' lar. The details of the examination are left entirely to the head teacher at each of the school braflcnes of the league. The names of the most' deserving competitors (say. 10 per cent, of the total) should be handed in at this office before the end of October. I take, this opportunity of reminding you that books and badges for juvenile members for this year are now available. A visit of the^ flagship Drake is expected towards the cldee of 'the year.*
