OBITUARY
MR. CHARLES STAFFORD NIXON At an early hour this morning Mr. Charles Stafford Nixon, lately Collector of Customs and Chief Inspector of the Customs Department, died at his residence in Tinakori-road. He had been in failing health for some time. Deceased, who was about 57 years of age, was second son of the lato Major Nixon, of Wanganui. He was educated at Wanganui College, and he passed the Junior and Senior Civil Service examinations when seventeen years of age. He came second on the list-Jlis elder brother was firnt. The examination was a hard one, only seven boys passing out of eighty-seven. On Ist July, 1872, Mr. Nixon joined the Customs service at Westport, co that on bis retirement, on 12th August, he had completed over forty years' service. After a stay of eighteen months at Westport, Mr. Nixon was transferred to Greymouth, where he remained for five ana a half years, afterwards going to Invercargill for a four and a naif years' term. From Invercargill he came to Wellington to fill the position of landing-waiter. He saw eight years' service here, and then three years in Lyttelton as land ing- waiter and tideeurveyor. Next he went to New Plymouth, where he first held the office of collector. Six years as landing surveyor at Dunedin, six years as collector at Timaru, eighteen months as collector at Napier, and then Mr. Nixon was appointed collector at Wellington. Two years after coming to Wellington he was appointed Inspector of Cuatome for the Dominion. This office and the collectorship ho held up to the time of his retirement, on 12th August. Deceased leaves a widow, three single daughters, and two sons — Mr. C. S. Nixon, who is in Auutralia, and Mr. Benjamin Disraeli Nixon, who h at Nelson College. The funeral will take place at 9.30 a.m. on Friday.
