Tho. new Emperor, after taking part in many quaint accession ceremonies, retired to the Aoyama Palace, where ho will remain for five days in the deepest mourning. His coronation will take place at Kyoto in 1913. King George has cabled condolences to the new monarch, and the British Ambassador conveyed Sir Edward Grey'a and the Government's expression of Britain's deepest sorrow. WASHINGTON, 30th July. President Taft called to-day at tho Japanese Embassy and expressed sympathy, oh behalf of the American Government and people, with the Japanese nation in the doath of their Emperor. Tho new Emperor Yoshi-Hito and the Empress-Dowager Haruko have cabled thanks for the kindly expressions. SYDNEY, 31st July. Flags were half-masted in the city to-day out of respect for the late Emperor, and many messages of condolences have been sent to the ConeulGeneral for Japan. The latter lias received a cable announcing that the Crown Prince was proclaimed Emperor seventeen minutes after his ' father's death. As a mark of respect to the late Emperor of Japan, the flags in the chief Government buildings in New Zealand were at half-mast yesterday.
