AUCKLAND AS THE NAVAL BASE A HUGE TRADE LOSS SUGGESTED REMEDY, Bj Telegraph.— Frew Assoclafctoa.—Copyright.(Received July 12, 8.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day." The transfer of the naval base to Auckland means a trade loss to Sydney of from £80,000 to £100,000 annuaJtly. Mr. Kitchen, managing director of the Sydney Soap and Candle Company, suggests as a remedy to let tho Commonwealth Government approach the Im> perial 'authorities with a proposal to jointly appoint a victualling officer who might act on behalf of both, buying for the Imperial and Australian Fleet vessels. "There would then be a chance of competing against New Zealand," says Mr. Kitchen, "and if New Zealand can supply the goods at a lower price than Australia, then good luck to her; but tho odds are we t?hould keep most of the trade wo have had before."
