CAREERS FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN

A COVENTRY EXPERIMENT. The problem of the boy and girl just leaving school ie now being tackled in a systematic manner in Coventry. Under a scheme lately sanctioned by the Board of Education, a Juvenile Employment 'Bureau was opened, with Mr. A. E. Robinson, the superintendent school attendance officer, at the head. He stated that there were about 1000 boys and girls leaving school every year, many of whom were ablo to obtain employment at once. To those who could not, or^avhosQ parents wished, a card would be™given by their headmasters, which the e^-scholars bring to the bureau to be registered. Information is given on the card as to the aptitude displayed by the bearer for any particular occupation, which forms a guide upon which the bureau bases its action in trying to place the boy or girl in a situation. The work of the bureau does not end in its ' being the meanb through which employment may be obtained. By a scheme of systematic enquiries it lollows the progress of those it assists. Should a boy or girl be found a position which turned out unsuitable, further efforts would be made to provide congenial employment for 'them. Thib course will be followed till the young persons are 16, when their cases, if they fall out of work, will have to be dealt with at the National Laboui Bureau, in Ford-street. It will be the aim of the juvenile exchange to place their proteges in occupations that may be classed as stable, and as far as possible tho apprenticeship system will be encouraged. The response on the part of employers in the city, has been most gratifying, and there is every reason to hope that the bureau will fulfil its mission with success.
