OCEANA-PISAGUA COLLISION. CHIEF OFFICER~~iL>EOLARES DECISION UNJUST. By Xelefraph.— Eress Association.— CopyrleJit. LONDON, 26th June. The certificate of the chief officer of the Ooeana (who was held responsible for the collision between the P. and O. iiner Oceana and the German barque Pisagoa off Beachy- Head on 15th. March) was suspended for six' months. The Court held that the loss of life (seven or eight persons were drowned as a result of a boat capsizing j^hile being launched) was chiefly due to an error of judgment on his part. It censured him and th« master for failing to take adequate rescue measures. The chief officer declared the decision unjust. The Cottrt found the hoate on the steamer sufficient, but declared the man rung was insufficient, and inspection had been inadequate. Notwithstanding the company's elaborate system the Court was dismayed at its failure under not particularly difficult circumstances. LONDON, 26th June. The Admiralty Court has awarded the New Zealand Shipping Company damages in connection with the collision between the company's steamer Otaki and the Austrian, steamer Bitinia at Gravesend in November last.
