'; William Ward, who was arrested in fWest Australia in February last on a charge of murdering Ernest Nixey Smith at Chiswick m 1908, was found guilty of manslaughter, and sentenced to nine ynonths' imprisonment. While in Brixton prison Ward Eaved "the life of q, warder whom another pri*oner had attacked. \ [On 28th October, 1908, Ernest Nixey (Smith, seci'efcary and manager of a dairy at Chiswdck, was seen talking to a man, at tie corner of Turnham Green-terrace. A few minutes later he was discovered Jp&g on the ground unconscious, and suffering from serious injuries to his iheacL _ He was removed to a hospital, hvXi died without recovering consciousbess. At the inquest witnesses came for•waixl to "testify that they had seen the man engaged in a violent altercation with William Ward at the time mentioned. The latter carried an umbrella with a sharp ferrule, and, according to the tofidical evidence, the injury $o Mr. Smith, which was a deep punctored wound on the left temple, might have been caused by just such an implcbment. Meanwhile the man alluded to iad. disappeared, and all efforts to discover his whereabouts proved unavailing. The coroner's jury returned a verdict of ifrilful murder against him, and on Ist Beeember the police issued an official iotice offering a reward of £50 for his apprehension.
