Court at il-sr^a-villo with having inflicted ycruelty upon a hawk. -The. bird had been shot ai, its head being injured and'ono wing broken. Two men who called at the natiy« settlement stated they saw defendant throw the live bird on the firo'and in, its agony it scatter^ the hot embois about. on tho evidence of accused and his witnesses, and said if the accused had been a pakeha ho would have sent him to gaol for a month. The accused appeared to- have been angry at the depnedatio&e of the hawk amongst his fowls, but he must be taught that such cruelty would be severely dealt with. Accused was lined £5, with' the alternative of imprisonment for fourteen days. The fine was paid.
