A large and representative meeting of the public comprising citizens and businessmen, directors of the local mining companies, and miners, held last night at the Council Chambers, the county chairman presiding, unanimously xefiolved that a. committee be set ud to aci on behalf of the citizens to enquire into it and if possible mediate in the present dispute. The speakers strongly objected to the linking of the Waihi strike and the Reefton trouble, as a common etrikt>. A strong and representative committee was elected. This met afterwards, apd sent the- following telegram to the Minis ter of Labour: "Mass meeting of representative** of public last night expressed strong feeling at the action of the Labour Department in delay in stating its intention or otherwise of proceeding in connection with the labour trouble Here. The company ie also asking for three months protection for the mining properties. The meeting urgently recommends that action be taken and that the Arbitration Court' be asked to sit at once." The meeting was enthusiastic. It is more than likely that opposition to the granting of protection will bo made, on pnblic grounds. Application will b« made at the Warden's Court an 27th. June, the companies asking for Protection on every property owing to Labour j trouble*. - \
