Representatives of the mining section of the Federation of Labour waited on tho Minister of Mines (Hon. X Colvin} f yesterday afternoon. It was urged thai ■ a provision similar to that obtaining in England, that no miner should work more than eight hours out of the twenty-four, ehould be inserted in the Act. Tho deputation also desired that the Government should adopt the minority report of the Mines Commiesion, and that the Government • ehould enforce tho "bank to bank" clause at the Otifa Tunnel works. The Minister «aid a Bill was now being prepared, and he would do hw best to meet the wishes of the miner*. , Matters concerning co-operative works ' were brought under - the ndtico of the \ Minister for Labour (Hon. G. Lauren- k son) by a deputation from the Federation' of Labour. They claimed that too much power was^ placed in the hands of the officer in charge^ and there wae c no right of appeal from his decision. k They asked for a week" of forty-four instead of forty-eight hours, and that . once a contract was signed there should be no variation from it. It was stated that the co-operative syatem, if properly managed, was the cheapest way of carrying out public works; at the same time, the system waa badly managed, because contracts, in many cases, were nothing more than a farce. Men were " now paid according to the state of the i engineer's live,r. The Minister said * he would lay the representations before ( the Minister of Public Works on his return to Wellington. c Tenders are invited for the supply, de- \ livery, and erection of boilers tor Point Elizabeth No. 2, State coalmine. l
