HARDWARE GUP Ou Saturday, the fourth annual competition for the Hardware Rifle Cup was fired at Trentham. The cup is a handsome silver one, presented by Messrs Briscoo and Co., Ltd., J. Duthie and | Co., Ltd., E. W, Mills and Co.. Ltd.. C. ' and A. Odlin Co., Ltd., and the Stew- ' art Hardware Co., Ltd., for annual competition by teams from their respective houses. The 'conditions are: Cup to be won three times before becoming the property of any team ; ranges, 300 and 500 I < yards, seven shots at each, ten men a I side. At 300 yards, when half of each team ' had fired, Odlin's led by seven points with 124, Stewart and Duthie being together with 117, Mills 112, and Bnscoo 97. With the second division down Odlin's inoreasfd their lead by one point, totalling 235 for the range. Stewart's, going steadily, shook off Duthie's, and with 227 ran into second place, Duthie's following with 218, Mills 217, Briscoo 175. Going back to 500 yards, the hoavy wind and gloomy atmosphere made shooting very djrtlcplt. Howevor, under the conditions, very creditable scoring was done*. \With the first half down Mills began to move along, and pulling nine points on the leaders, run into second plaoe. Duthie's also closed up four points on the leaders, while Stewart's fell back a little. The totals were now : Odlin's 356, Mills 347, Duthie 142,, Stewart's 332, Briscoe 261. It was still anybody's match, and the finish was very keenly fought out." With the last squads down, Duthie's passed Mills, and steadily gained on Odlin's, finally finishing only eight points behind the leaders. Mills finished third, five rjoints away, Stewart's fourth, and Briscoe fifth. It was a splendid contest, only thirteen points separating the first three teams. The final totals were: — Odlin'fl 470, Duthie'B 462, Mills 467, Stewart's 428, Brisooe's 354. Odlin's have now scored two wins, as also have Mills. The feature of this match waa the great advanco made by Stewart's team, who improved on their last year's total by well over a hundred points. The highest score in the match was made Ly O. Hodder, of Odlin's, who put on 60— -a fine Bhoot on the day. The cup will be presented at the annual hardware smoke concert on Thursday next. Captain Boache kindly acted as range officer, Mr. Hugo taking charge of the target trench. Scores; —
