COURT CASES.
Dr. M'Arthur f _ S.M., presided at the Magiatrate'e Court ' yesterday. Several persons charged with drunkenness were dealt with. Job. Thos. S. Baker and Thos. Coleman were convicted and discharged, and a penalty of 10s was imposed on Archibald M'Leam Two first offenders had their bail estreated. Margaret Webb, charged with helpless drunkeniese, was remanded, for medical treatment. An elderly man, Klaus Neilson, charged ■with being an idle and disorderly person, -wae sent to gaol for three months. For allowing horses to wander, 'Alex. Reid and Alex. Johnson were mulcted in penalties of £1 and 14s respectively. Chas. Robert Elford, who left a vehicle unattended in Willis-street, was fined 10s, with costs 7s, and Walter Brown, who drove a cab at more than a walking yaes round the corner of Cuba and Manners streets, was penalised in the sum of 12s. For riding a bicycle on the footpath in Jervois-quay, Chas. Arch. Falkland was fined sa, with oosto 7b. A man named Stewart, who travelled on a tramcar without paying his fare, was fined sb, with co&ts 15s, and witnesses expenses 12«. He was also fined 20s, with costs 15s for using offensive language. It was stated by Mr. Sladden that. Stewart was under the influence of drink at the time. ' . ■ For wilfully impeding a tram car by driving a motor car in front of" it, Chas. Diehl wa6 fined 20s, with costs 15s, and witnesses' expenses 18s. , In the case in which .Victor Wiggery was charged' with having failed to take the oath of allegiance under tho Def pnee Act, n further adjournment was granted until Wednesday week. Dr. M Arthur intimated that as the matter had been befqro Mr. Riddell in the first instance, he did not wi&h to deal with it. Efstheos Gallate was charged with three breaches of the sanitary by-laws. It was alleged that he had disconnected a convenience at tho Continental Cafe in Wil-lie-street with a s&wer, and failed to seal the end of the drain with a regulation stopper; also that he had allowed refuse to accumulate so as to cause an offensive smelL Mr. Fair, who appeared for defendant, stated that the matter had now been •, remedied. Fines, _ amounting to £10, with costs and solicitor's fee £3 3s, were .imposed. Mainland and Barr, who erected a scaffolding over 16ft high without first notifying the Inspector of Scaffolding, wore fined 5», with costs 9s. The following persons were charged with drunkenness before Mr. Thomas Bland, J.P., at the Mount Cook Police Court this morning: — Mary Johnston, Patrick Logue, and Michael Greygory, each fined 10a, with the usual option of forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Two first-offending inebriates were convicted and discharged.
