BRIDE FLEES BY MOTOR-CAR
Excitement prevailed ia the market town of Bakewell, when it became know that the marriage which was to have iak«n place between the daughter of a. well-known local tradesman and a Nonconformist minister would not take place, owing to the disappearance of the bride. Th*> lady is Miss Barrett, daughter of Mr. Barrett, draper, of King-street, Bakewell, and the pros* pective bridegroom is the Rev. G. Conquer, who has only just returned from work in Africa. The pair had made each other's 1 acquaintance some time ago, when Mr. Conquer was a student at Cliff College, Bakewell. Every arrangement had been made for tht ceremony in the Primitive Methodist Chapel, of which the bride's father is a prominent member. Two hundred invitations had been sent out for the wedding breakfast, and a further 100 guests had been invited to meet the bride and bridegroom on their return from the honeymoon. It appears that Miss Barrett visited some friends the previous afternoon, and then declared that she would not marry Mr. Conquer. In spite of the entreaties of her friends she remained inflexible. Finally she telephoned to the local garage to have a motor-car in readiness at dusk. Muss Barrett, accompanied by an elderly lady, drove in the direction of Buxton, ana after a temporary breakdown of the car proceeded in another direction. The distracted father and the prospective bridejjrooni made anxious enquiries until midnight without result, but obtained a clue the following day. A car was procured, and they set off m hot pursuit. It was eventually discovered that Miss Barrett had been traced to Glossop, where she had cvi dently stopped the night. It is stated that Mi&s Barrett, previous to her departure, personally countermanded orders for flowers, refreshments, and other details, showing that her flight was premeditated.
