THE CITY MAYORALTY.
MR. Af-TEEN WILL NOT STAND. Mr. J. G. W. Aitken, who was Mayor of Wellington for five terms, intimated to the executive of the Wellington Citizens' League this morning that he was unable to see his way to accede to its request to again become a candidate. The executive afterwards approached Councillor Shirtcliifa, and asked him to reconsider his decision not to stand for the Mayoralty. Mr. Shirtcliffe promised to give a definite reply to-morrow. Councillor Robert Fletcher, of the City Council, who has been approached by letter and to sttfnd for Mayoralty informed a Post reporter this afternoon that it was impossible for him to accede to the numerous requests he had received. He was fully seized with the honour of the position but he desired to continue his work as chairman of the Harbour Board for another year, and he did not see . how he could hold the two positions simultaneously in the event of his being elected Mayor. He therefor© had to decline with regret the request to stand.
