Tho ceremony _ of turning the first sod in connection with the construction of a railway' to connect Napier and Gisborne took place this afternoon at the West Shore, ia fine weather. The attendance j was very large and representative of the i whole district. The town was gaily dressed with bunting, and a half holiday was observed by the business people. The ceremony was performed by Sir Joseph Ward, and speeches, were delivered by the members for the district. The Premier was also entertained at a complimentary luncheon.
