THE ONLY OBSTACLE.
HENNIKER HEATON ON CHEAPER CABLES. ■} Telegraph.— Pre»» Asioclattou.— Copjrlihfc,' - SYDNEY, 11th January. Mr. Henniker Heaton, in an interview, stated that Sir Joseph Ward had been a great advocate' of cheaper cables, and never failed to use all the eloquence in his power, and to offer large subsidies binding on New Zealand for a, national cable. The deferred cable concessions were too. amusing to contemplate when it was realised that there were sixteen cables between England and America, capable of carrying 225,000,000 words per annum, while only 21>000,000 words were 'sent. It had been asserted, and not contradicted, that from six to ten of these lines were kept idle by a ring of vested- interests. This was the -only obstacle in the way of shilling cables. 1 M__Bl^aKaiaaaM __ Bl^ aKaiaaa
