From the Government Printing Bureau at Ottawa we have received a copy of "Tide Tables of the Pacific Coast of Canada," with data for slack water in the navigable passes and other useful information, prepared ■by Mr. W. Bell Dawson, Superintendent of the Tidal and Current Survey Department of Canada.^ The work is indispensable to mariners trading to the Pacific coast. On the Hauraki Plains, in the Thames | Valley, near Auckland, the Government j has put down five artesian wells to depths of from 300 ft to 600 ft. A splendid supply of water haa been met with in each case, the flow rising several feet above the surface, and yielding from 4000 gallons up to 115,200 gallons per day. 4 But the water is warm sodawater, and the people who first drink at the crystal flow usually cet a taste which makes them look thoughtful for awhile. As a matter of fact (says the Auckland Herald) although this water can- be ranked as a first-class corrective in cases of rheumatism or bladder troubles it is not a pleasant beverage, and the settlers have not yet cultivated a taste for it, co they depend on rain. Stock seem to like this drink even unadulterated, and thrive on it, and there seems a likelihood now that the district k carrying so many cows that milk and sodawatel 1 will become the general product of these newly-reclaimed fertile plains. «Mt. Wiig, Norwegian sub-Consul, stated to a Southland Times reporter a day or two ago that all arrangements had been completed at this end in connection with the Norwegian whaling expeditions which will shortly make a descent on Southern seaa.
