FALSE PRETENCES.

AUCKLAND, 2lst December. A well-dressed man was brought before Mr. E. C. Cutten S.M., at the Police Court, on three charges of having obtained money under false pretences. He had given his name as Henry Westwood Brown, but he had used the name of M'Cormack as an alias. Chief Detective Marsack, in outlining the case, said that Brown had been going about the country districts of Auckland province representing himself to be a Government inspector of machinery, which ho was not, and never had been. On the strength of these representations he gained access to the premises of several farmers, and on various pretexts got money from them, and also a tiki valued at £70 from a Maori woman at Oparure. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
