MR. WILLIAM INGLIS.

The death occurred at an early hoit» tliis morning, after a lengthy illness, of Mr. William Inglie, an old resident of Petone. The late Mr. Inglis was well known tire Hutt Valley, and universally liked. Bom about forty-six years ago, he was the son of the late Dr. Inglis, of Mosgiel. who was on© o{ the first medical practitioners in Otago. Following in hie father's footeteps, he ! commenced the Btudy of medidne, being apprenticed to a chemist in Duhedin, and after a time he came to Wellington, where he was associated with Mr. W. E. Woods. He then went to Wangamui, and later to Petone. There he took over the established business' of Mr. Sykes, and the old chop, bearing the name of the original owner «f the>> business (Mi 66 L. Heath) still stanas in Jackson - street. It ie about "twenty years eince the deceased gentleman first settled in Petone, f»nd he has been there eyer since. He has alWay* interested himself in come form of eport, but chiefly cricket. He was one of the principal founders of the Petone Cricket Club about eighteen yearn ago—the first cricket club in. the valley-=»and in the games lie gained come renown a* a bowler. When the proposal wa* made to establish the. Hutt valley Trotting Club, he was equally enthusiastic. He was among the original founders, and for some time acted as handicapper. He did not enter public •life to any great extent, but for the pact nine years nad been a member of the Hutt Licensing Bench. He retired Irom this body just prior to the la«st annual meeting in June, and in announcing the tact, the chairman (Dr. M'Arthur) paid a high tribute to- Mr. Inglis'e character. The late Mr. Inglis wae a Pa*t Master of the Ulster Lodge of Freemason*, of which he ha« always been a prominent member. He was also a. Justice of the Peace, and up to some time ago, his was a familiar face* on the Bench. It is about fourteen' months since he was overtaken by tho illness which ha« ended in death. The late Mr. Inglis waa twice married, I and his second wife and five children survive him. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon next at 2.30 o'clock, leaving for the Taita Cemetery. Another old Settler. Mr. John Smith, died at Wakefield, Nelson, last Thursday. He s came to New Zealand from Scotland sixty-one years ago, and took up land in the Nelson province, where he lived until his death, at the ripe ..age of 88. He leaves a family of threesons and four daughters. To-night a general meeting of delegates to the Wellington Rugby Union will be j held in the Chamber of Commerce.
