Good progress is being made with tho construction of tho Waihenga bridge, on the Featherston-Martinborough road, some teh spans haying been completed and all the piles driven. It is expected by the engineer that the remaining four spans will be completed early in November, and the bridge be open for traffic at tho end of that month. The anhual "social" of tho Liberal Football Club, which this season won. the junior championship, was a great success. There were over 90 couples present, including visitors from all parts of the Wai» rarapa. t The medab won during the season by junior and third-class players were presented by _ Mr. "Barton, patron of the club. Mr. victor Saunders, a prominent player, was presented with a travellingbag as a, mark of appreciation of his valuable services. At the monthly meetiug of the County Council a deputation of Lower Valley settlers, introduced by Mr. Holmes Warren, waited upon the council in respect to being granted facilities for obtaining telephone communication with Pirinoa. The chairman advised tho deputation to apply to the Government, with the possibility of the State being induced to take over the lino of the Lower Valley Telephone Association. When discussing the matter of obtaining a grant from the Government for certain road work, the chairman, at the monthly meeting of the County Council, commented adversely Upon applications being made for grants for works upon which the council making such application was fiot prepared to expend money. For waste of public money in this direction county councils wero as much to blame as the Govorninenfc.
