Gangs of roughs threw stones and bottles at the police, and a. fierce fight followed. Many of the riotewt were injured by baton charges bj the constables, and a dozen wer& taken to the hospital. The Riot Act was read. Soldiers with fixed bayonets marched through the principal thoroughfares, and the rioters took refuge in side street*, from which they stoned the military.
