EXPLOSION OF GAS IN A MINE
MINERS SEEK WORK ELSEWHERE. DUNEDIN, 22nd August. ( About 1 o'clock yesterday an explosion of gas occurred in the Kaitangata coal mine, blowing out one of the stoppings and knocking over two men, Thomas Carson and Hawkins. The men Were stunned for A time, but soon recovered and were able to walk home. Th© explosion occurred in No. 5 dip, near the main workings, and there were a_ number of men working in th© vicinity. The noise wa£ he&rd all over ths section, and the men stopped work And rushed to the pit mouth. The afternoon shift refused to go on, consequently nothing was done in the mine yesterday afternoon. The spot where the explosion took place was one of those areas where bad gases are known to exist. The place was "stopped up" to keep the gases in. There was a olow-out, however, and the gas ignited. This occurrence, following on the death of Joseph Carson last Thursday and the death of William M'Ghee from d. similar cause in May, besides A chapter'of minor accidents, has caused many miners to become "scared," and yestftfday ( after the explosion, a number declared their intention of seeking employment elsewhere.
