PETONE NAVALS' SMOKE CONCERT.
The annual smoke concert of the No. 9 Company Garrison Artillery was held at the Petone Drillshed on Saturday evening. There was a large attendance of visiting officers, members, and exI members. Captain Bevan, officer cotn> hianding, was in the chair, and was supported by Colonel CanTpbelL Mr. J. W. M'Ewan (Mayor), Majors Courtenay and ■ftGßon, Surgeon-Colonel Purdy, Captains Gardner (divisiona.l adjutant), Hose, Stuart-Robinson, and Lieutenants Hollie, Matthews, and Kirk. The proceedings went with a will, and the speeches were characterised by an earnest spirit of patriotism and a happy blending of humour and confidence m the future of the new defence scheme. . Colonel Campbell inferred to the op. ponents of military registration as being subjects for pity rather ,than opposition: pity for their misfortune m being cast in a less manly mould than their fellowe, and really not worth taking notice of or being exalted by serious consideration of their foibles to the position of martyrs. Their efforts were- ( rather less of a hindrance than a help in hardening up the national spirit. Vocal and other items rendered by Lieutenants Hollie and Kirk. Bombardiers May and Miller, and Gunner Pattinson helped to pass a very pleasant evening. An excellent topical song was Tendered by Corporal Blake. The following toasts Were rendered and responded to: "The Headquarters Staff," '•Divisional Staff." "U.N.Z.A. Instructors,'^ "Army and Navy," "Donors of Trophies," " Ex-Member's," and several others. The toast of " Civilian Friends and Guests " was proposed by Lieutenant Matthews and responded to by the Mayor in a fitting manner.
