CAR PLUNGES INTO A RIVER. THREE PASSENGERS DROWNED. By Telegraph,-»Presß Association.— Copyright. SYDNEY, 27th July. A motor-car, containing three passengers and a driver, plunged into the. Hunter River near Muswellbrook. The passengers — Mrs. Harrington, Alderman Mackay (of Enfield), and Mr. Flavey (manager of the Tindale Com?any at Muswellbrook)— were drowned, he driver escaped. _ ' The party \vas_ returning from Merriwa late at night in the dark, and was twelve miles from Muswellbrook, at a spot where the road tuiib closo to the river bank. The motor ran off, and plunged into the flooded river, 40ft below. The chaffeur (Mr. Suese) was thrown clear of the car and wa-shed several hundred yards down the viver. Hemanaged to rid himself of his overcoat, and scrambled ashore. Mrs. Barrington's body has been recovered. She was a, prominent worker in the Liberal cause in Victoea and New South Wales, and was touring the district as organiser for the Liberal League. Mr. Mackay was an eX'Mayor of Enfield, and a well-known carca-ss butcher. Mr. Flavey was ma-nager of the Tindale Company at Muswellbrook. Suess was a stranger to the district, and was unaware that the floods had scooped out a portion of the road, necessitating a, deviation. He followed the old road, and plunged across a gap into 30ft of water.
