TROUBLE AMONG GOOD TEMPLARS.
CHARTER SUSPENDED IN AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, 12th May. Dissension having arisen in the' ranks of Good Templar lodges in Auckland, primarily, it ie stated, over the" formation of a glee party, tho culmination has been the^ suspension of the charter to the district for two y^ars. It, appeals that some time ago youthful membera ot local lodges etarted a glee club, and their cwiu-ibutions iapidly gained such popularity that the services of the party were in frequent demand. Some oi. the officials, however, objected to the' exktcnce of the Glee Club, a-nd, mor©' in the nature 'of a joke than anything, they came to be st\ied the ''Temperance Rowdy Mob.'.' The club was" disbanded after a while, but recently revived oy Mr D. Stowe, of the Star of Newton Lodge, under tha name of " The Temperance Pleasure Club." Things apparently, went along s-moothly enough, but some hostility waa shown when Mr. Stov<c was nominated for th? position of -District Chief Templar for ' Auckland, and in the election lie defeated hie 'opponent. The legality of the election was contested, but without result, and thoftgh the Grand Chief Templar of Dunedin attempted to conciliate tbs parties, the intervention of
the Grand Lodge of New Zealand was sought, and the suspension of the charter followed. An appeal haa been made to the boaid of the chief lodge of the order at Birmingham, but in the meantime the Auckland district lodge has been abolished and the local lodgee act as separate units. Considerable feeling has been aroused over the matter. DUNEDiN NOTES. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS. MORE UNINHABITED HOUSES. iBX TXLEGBAPH — SfECIAD TO lUX POBT.I DUNEDIN. This Day. The executive of the School Committees' Association has decided to recommend school committees to observe Coronation Week, commencing Monday, 19th June, for the midwinter* 1 term holidays. ' It has also decided to rei commend committees to observe Monday, sth June, as a holiday in honour of the King's Birthday, in lieu of the correct date, 3rd June, which this year falls on a Saturda-y. The _ chief census enumerator for the Dunedin district finds on. going through tho returns that on the night of Sunday, the 2nd April, thero were i 215 uninhabited houses in the whole area. In order to get at the truth about this "uninhabited, houses" question, it is necessary to remember that in a very great many instances the houses set down as uninhabited are not empty, but were not occupied on census .flight; in other words, th© occupiers were away for temporary holidays, most of them at week-tend resorts.
