UPPER HUTT AFFAIRS.

MEETDIQ OF TOWN BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Upper Hutt Town Board, waa held last evening, Commissioner J. 'Harrison presiding. The Charitable Aid Board notified the amount of thia year's levy, which is slightly in excess of that pa-id last year. A suggestion was made that the Board should fittingly celebrate Coronation Day, but in this connection it wae decided to await a lead from the Government aa to what form the ceremonies should take. The clerk reported the result of recent prosecutions for breaches of by-lawe. The board was successful in every case brought, and benefited io the extent of about 40s in fines. Mr. Terrance M'Mullen, an ex-road contractor of Pahiatua, was appointed working foreman for tho district. The Doard's ranger was instructed to. collect tho dog tax for the current year. The question of office accommodation was again discussed, and the chairman was directed to take preliminary etepa necessary for the taking of a further poll on tho amended proposal for the erection of offices and a meeting room at a cost of £500. A deputation of landowners and residents of Gibbons's-road waited on tho board, asking that the eastern footpath be (gravelled for a distance of half a mile. The chairman, in reply, pointed out that the board had already arranged for a gravelled graded footway, which would serve all the houses and connect with Royal-street. In one case where the house would not be served by this, the owner was given permission to gravel the footpath at his own expense The police at Lyttelton are. searching for a sailor belonging to the steamer Harpagus. The man is of German nationality, and is suffering from a complaint that resk'icts him from, making his abode in New Zealand. No word of bio whereabout© had been received up to the hour the steamer left Lyttelton for Dunedin on Tuesday. It is understood that , unless the missing man ia found before the vessel sails from these shores the master will be responsible foran indemnity of £100. The manager of the Mastorton Borough' Gasworks states that during the past financial year the gas manufactured showed an increase of 1,127,700 cubic feet, and gas sold per meter an increase of 1^641,200 cubic feet, equal to 7.7 per cent., which, under the condition of business holding in Master ton is considered satisfactory.
