DAMAGES FOR SLANDER. 8y Telegraph.— Wesa Association.— Copyright , LONDON, 9th April. Mr. Winston Churchill, Home- Secre•tary,' has been awarded damages for slander from a Conservative working man, who, at a political meeting at Chagford, accused Mr. Churchill of breaking his parol© when he escaped from Pretoria during the South Africa war. An apology has now been offered, with a promise not to repeat the slander. [Mr. Churchill acted as war correspondent for the London Morning Post during the Boer war. He was mad© prisoner, but after being in custody for about a 'month, made liis escape. He ran the gauntlet for many days, during which he covered some 300 miles of country, and then reached safety.]
