MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court to-day. A disturbance which occurred outside the Club Hotel on Saturday evening resulted in Win. John Taylor being charged with using threatening behaviour. Defendant, who pleaded not guilty, was convicted and fined 20s, in default' to undergo forty-eight hours' imprisonment. For using obscene language, Edward M'Gibbon was lined £3. with two witnesses' expenses Bs. His alternative was fourteen days' imprisonment. Norman Ramsay came up for sentence on a charge of theft of a bicycle from John Flanaghan. He was fined £3, witli the option ox twenty-one days' imprisonment. A fine of 40s, with, the option of seven days' imprisonment, was imposed on Chas. Thompson, who pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of three blankets and one pillow blip, valued at £1 3s 3d, the property of the Union Steam Ship Co. I'ee Wong pleaded guilty to two charges— (l) With having unlawfully -smoked opium, (2) with being in possession of opium suitable for smoking. He was fined £5, with interpreter's fee lUs 6d, on the first charge, and £10 on the second charge. For riding a motor cycle after sunset without a light, .lames Stelfing was mulcted in a penalty of 10s, with, costs 75,,, in default to undergo forty-eight hours' imprisonment. Lavant M'Williams- was mulcted in a penalty of 10s, with costs 7s, for tethering a cow in Adelaide-road. His alternative was 48 hours' imprisonment, i' Kate Dorothy Madge Paton was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order, arrears of which amounted to £26 16s. After hearing evidence, his Worship remitted the. arrears, and reduced the amount of the order to 2s 6d per week. George Hazley Davis was -sentenced to one month's imprisonment for disobedience of a maintenance order, arrears of^which amounted to £8 ss. The warrant is to be suspended so long as defendant pays 8s per week' off the arrears. Charles Enticott was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for disobedience of a maintenance order, arrears of which amounted to £44 ss. An order for the payment of 10s per week for the support of his wife and another for 5s per week for the- maintenance of his child were made against Alfred E. Capper. He was also ordered to pay solicitor's fees amounting to £2 2s. Jas. Shivnan and William Lzary were jointly charged with using threatening behaviour in Cuba-street on the evening of the 7th of April. Pleas of not guilty were entered by defendants, who w«re represented by Messrs P. J. O'Regan and F. Kelly respectively. Sub-inspector Sheehan prosecuted. After hearing evidence, his worship fined Shivnan 40s, with one witness's expenses (As), with the alternative of seven"' days' imprisonment. O'Leary was discharged. At the Mount Cook Police Court this morning, before Mr. Horace Baker, JjP., a first-offending inebriate, on bail, was fined 10s, with the alternative of •48 hours' imprisonment. Before Mr. Chapman, J.P., at Lower Hutt, Arthur H. Mudgway, for drunkenness, was fined ss, with '7s ccsts. ' Mr. Alex. -Webster, returning officer, Petorl& inserts notifications re the local municipal elections; also one concerning the Harbour Board election. An advertisement relating to apple-grow-ing land, comprising the B'-onte Estate, situated at Nelson, will bo found in our auction columns. The land is for sale by Messrs. Miller and Rutter.
