A wide area at the back of Cairns is submerged to a depth of several feet. The flood waters are steadily receding. The damage to the railways has been so serious that it will be two months before i*egular traffic will be restored. Meantime the back country will be unable to get mails and food supplies, and is threatened with a famine.
